Specialist agent role

Cold Email Outbound

An AI specialist agent that researches each prospect, drafts cold emails in your voice with one ask + one opt-out, and never auto-sends. Built for indie founders who want outbound that's personal — not for spray-and-pray sequencers.

Schedule · Mon 9:00 AM (weekly batch) + ad-hoc when you flag a prospect

Sample briefing

"8 prospects researched this week. @alice (CTO at acme.dev, strong fit, 4.4/5): hook on her Rust hiring page — they're scaling backend; one ask (15-min call), one opt-out, no "hope you're well" preamble. Subject line A/B-tested: question-format outperformed your last 4 sends by ~22%. Email is in your IM as a draft; nothing has been sent."

What Cold Email Outbound does

  • Researches each prospect — recent posts, hiring signals, product launches, what they're publicly working on
  • Scores fit honestly — does this prospect actually have your problem; weak fits get filtered, not pitched
  • Drafts cold emails in your voice — one specific hook from the prospect's recent activity, one ask, one opt-out line
  • A/B-tests subject-line variants against your past sends — picks the structure most likely to land in the prospect's inbox
  • Maintains the per-tenant 'do not contact' list — declined prospects, replied prospects, anyone who opted out
  • Generates a follow-up draft 14 days after a non-reply (one follow-up only — no four-touch sequences)
  • Logs every send + reply in tenant memory so the role doesn't pitch the same prospect twice

How it works

Cold email is one of the highest-leverage outbound channels for indie SaaS — and one of the most over-automated. Most cold-email tools optimise for volume: 1,000 prospects, 4-touch sequence, 2% reply rate, declared a win. That math works for a venture-backed SDR team; it doesn't work for an indie founder whose deliverability gets shredded the first time a sequencer flags their domain. Cold Email Outbound takes the other path: small batches, deep personalisation, draft-only delivery, your judgment on every send.

Research is the work; drafting is the output. For each candidate prospect the role pulls together a research file: their recent posts, what they're building, who they just hired, what their competitors are doing, what they wrote about on the company blog last month. The cold email references one specific thing from that file. If the role can't find a real hook from public sources, it surfaces the prospect as "low signal" and recommends skip rather than ship a generic email.

One ask. One opt-out. No "hope you're well". The role's draft template has three pieces: hook (specific reference from their recent activity), ask (one concrete next step — usually a 15-minute call or a specific document to review), opt-out ("if this isn't relevant, no problem at all — feel free to ignore"). It does NOT use "hope this finds you well", "wanted to reach out", "saw your work and thought", or any of the other AI-cold-email tells that get pattern-matched into spam instantly.

One follow-up, not four. If the prospect doesn't reply in 14 days, the role drafts ONE follow-up — short, references the original, no "just bumping this to the top of your inbox". After the follow-up the prospect goes dormant; we don't ship 4-touch sequences. The math on multi-touch in indie SaaS doesn't work — your domain reputation will collapse before the volume pays off.

What Cold Email Outbound does not do

  • Auto-send emails — every draft lands in your IM and waits for your one-click send
  • Run multi-touch sequences (3–5+ emails per prospect) — that pattern is sequencer territory; we don't ship it
  • Buy contact data from sketchy data brokers — prospect research is from public sources only (their site, posts, hiring pages)
  • Scrape LinkedIn for contact info (against their TOS; we don't ship the violation)
  • Promise specific reply rates — outcome depends on your offer, your prospect quality, and inbox luck

FAQ

Is there an AI for cold email outreach that I review before it sends?
Yes — that is exactly how Ceres's Cold Email Outbound agent works. It researches each prospect (recent posts, hiring signals, launches), drafts a cold email in your voice with one specific hook, one ask, and one opt-out line, and delivers it to your IM as a draft. Nothing sends without your one-click approval. It works in small batches of 5–20 a week and sends at most one follow-up — not spray-and-pray sequences.
Is this just an AI sequencer like Lemlist or Apollo?
No. Sequencers optimise for volume — large prospect lists, 3–5+ touches per prospect, automation everywhere. Cold Email Outbound optimises for quality — 5–20 prospects per week, deep research per prospect, draft-only delivery, max one follow-up. The two are different products for different ICPs. Sequencers work for venture-backed SDR teams; the quality-focused approach works for indie founders who can't afford to get their domain blacklisted.
How does it find prospects?
You provide the discovery criteria — the role doesn't auto-source prospects from a third-party database. Most customers feed it a hand-picked list (from their CRM, hiring pages they noticed, companies that posted relevant content). The role does the research + drafting on each prospect; the discovery is yours, because discovery is where ICP discipline matters most.
What about deliverability — won't AI-drafted emails get flagged as spam?
AI-drafted emails get flagged when they have AI-cold-email tells ("hope you're well", "wanted to reach out", "saw your work", etc.) and when the volume pattern looks automated. The role's draft template avoids those tells, the volume cap is small (5–20/week), and there's no auto-send timing — you send when you're ready. Deliverability is fundamentally about your domain's sending pattern, which stays in your hands.
How is this different from Twitter/X Growth or Creator Outreach?
Twitter/X Growth writes for your public audience (followers + algo discovery); the goal is brand and inbound. Creator Outreach finds creators with audiences that match your ICP; the channel is DM. Cold Email Outbound goes to prospects directly via email; the channel is inbox. Different surfaces, different cadences, different ICP signals — they share memory of your voice corrections so adjustments compound.
Can it integrate with my existing CRM (HubSpot, Pipedrive, etc.)?
It can read prospect lists exported from your CRM as CSV in Phase 1. Direct API integration with HubSpot / Pipedrive / Attio is on the connector roadmap; CSV bridging works today and covers most workflows.
