Best Semrush alternatives in 2026

By Jake Luo · Published Jul 17, 2026

Semrush is the broadest SEO suite on the market, and the breadth is real: keyword research, site audits, backlink analysis, rank tracking, PPC research, a local SEO toolkit, and — newer — visibility tracking inside Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. If you need SEO, paid search, content and local in one login, no single cheaper tool replaces all of it at once. Reviewers rate it 4.5/5 on G2 across roughly 3,300 reviews.

The complaints are consistent and they're mostly about money and complexity. G2 tags "Expensive" on over 500 reviews and "High Pricing" on nearly 470 more. Ease of use is the lowest-rated dimension on all three major review sites. Billing is the sharpest edge: Semrush's Trustpilot rating is 1.9/5, driven almost entirely by refund and auto-renewal disputes. And the tier price isn't the whole bill — extra seats start around $45/month each, with several capabilities sold as separate add-ons.

One thing worth knowing before you compare prices: Semrush currently runs two parallel pricing tracks on its own site. The classic SEO Toolkit starts at $139.95/month (Pro), while the newer "Semrush One" bundle — which adds AI-visibility tracking — starts at $139/month for the SEO tier and $199/month for Starter. That's a genuine source of confusion, not a trick. All figures on this page were checked against each vendor's own pricing page in July 2026; vendors change prices often, so verify before you buy.

The shortlist

  1. Top pick
    #1

    AgentCeres

A managed AI marketing team rather than an SEO suite. An SEO specialist does keyword research, on-page audits, topic clusters and programmatic pages — and actually ships them. This is a different shape from Semrush: it does the work rather than handing you the data to act on.

    Pros
    • Different gap: the specialist runs the research and writes the pages, rather than reporting what you should do
    • SEO sits alongside GEO, social, ads and research specialists sharing the same product context
    • Flat pricing, no per-seat metering and no add-on sprawl
    • Reads your Google Search Console directly, so recommendations are grounded in your real queries
    • Connects to your existing Semrush account, so the specialist reads your domain's organic rankings from the subscription you already pay for
    Cons
    • Not a Semrush replacement: no proprietary keyword database, no backlink index, no rank tracker
    • No PPC research, no local SEO toolkit, no toxic-link auditing
    • Wrong answer if you have an SEO person who just needs better data
    • If you need a competitor's backlink profile, you still need Ahrefs or Semrush for that
Pricing: $19–$499/mo flat (annual $15–$399); 14-day trial, no cardBest for: Founders with no SEO person, where the gap is execution rather than data

    Ahrefs

The most direct like-for-like alternative, and the benchmark for backlink data. If your SEO work is primarily link and competitor research, this is the closest honest swap.

    Pros
    • Best-in-class backlink index and crawler — the strongest reason to pick it over Semrush
    • Genuinely generous free tier (Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) for sites you can verify
    • Cleaner navigation between tools; excellent free educational content
    Cons
    • Credit-based limits on lower tiers are the dominant complaint theme since 2024
    • No local SEO toolkit; narrower than Semrush outside of search
    • Extra seats cost $40–$80/month depending on tier
Pricing: Starter $29/mo; Lite $129; Standard $249; Advanced $449; Enterprise $1,499 (annual commitment)Best for: Link-building and competitive backlink research as the primary job

    SE Ranking

The best value-per-dollar in the category. Most of Semrush's toolset — site audit, rank tracking, backlink monitoring, white-label reports — at roughly a third less.

    Pros
    • Far more tracked keywords per dollar: 2,000/day on Core vs 500 on Semrush's entry tier
    • White-label reporting that agencies rate highly
    • 14-day free trial with no card required
    Cons
    • Smaller backlink and keyword index than Semrush or Ahrefs
    • Thinner ecosystem — fewer integrations, less community content
    • Less brand recognition when presenting to clients
Pricing: Core $129/mo ($103.20/mo annual); Growth $279/mo; Enterprise customBest for: Budget-conscious agencies wanting most of Semrush without the price

  4. #4

    Mangools

The friendliest UI in the category — KWFinder, SERPChecker, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler bundled. Built for people who found Semrush overwhelming.

    Pros
    • Widely regarded as the most beginner-friendly interface in SEO tooling
    • Cheapest mainstream full toolset; 48-hour money-back guarantee
    • Enough for basic keyword research without a learning curve
    Cons
    • Small keyword and backlink database compared to the big two
    • Low daily lookup caps on the entry tier; limited API
    • No real content-marketing suite
Pricing: Basic from around $29.90/mo — verify on mangools.com, we could not confirm this from the vendor page directlyBest for: Solo founders and small businesses doing basic keyword research

  5. #5

    Ubersuggest

The budget option, including one-time lifetime pricing. Fine for keyword ideas and light audits; not a serious competitive-research tool.

    Pros
    • Cheapest of the mainstream tools, with lifetime licences available
    • Simple, beginner-oriented interface
    • Reasonable for generating keyword ideas
    Cons
    • Noticeably smaller and less precise dataset than Semrush in head-to-head comparisons
    • Thin backlink depth; low tracked-keyword caps (125/project on entry)
    • Not built for competitive gap analysis
Pricing: Individual $29/mo; Business $49/mo; Agency $99/mo; lifetime options $290–$990Best for: Solo bloggers starting SEO on a minimal budget

Google Search Console + Keyword Planner (free)

The honest zero-cost answer nobody selling you software will mention. GSC gives you your real queries, impressions and positions from Google itself; Keyword Planner gives you volume from the same source the ads auction uses.

    Pros
    • Free, and the data is first-party — it's Google telling you what Google saw
    • GSC surfaces your near-miss queries, which is where most early SEO wins actually live
    • Keyword Planner gives real volume without a subscription
    Cons
    • No competitor data at all — you can't see anyone else's keywords or backlinks
    • Keyword Planner buckets volume into ranges unless you run ads
    • No rank tracking, no site audit, no alerts — you assemble the workflow yourself
Pricing: $0Best for: Early-stage sites where the bottleneck is doing the work, not lacking data

The honest way to pick here is to name what's actually missing. If you need the data — competitor keywords, backlink gaps, rank tracking across hundreds of terms — then this is a suite question, and Ahrefs or SE Ranking are the real answers. Ahrefs if links are the job; SE Ranking if you want most of Semrush's surface area for meaningfully less. AgentCeres does not have a keyword database or a backlink index and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

Which is why this isn't an either/or, and we should say so plainly: if you keep Semrush, the SEO specialist can read it. Semrush is a live connector — you paste your API key, point it at a domain, and the specialist pulls that domain's organic keyword rankings, positions, search volumes and SERP features into the same context it writes from. Being precise about the limits, because they matter: it reads the domain you configure, it doesn't query the keyword database at large, and Semrush sells API access separately from the seat, so check your plan carries it. The suite is better at being a suite than we will ever be. Owning the data and having someone act on it are two different purchases.

If you have the data and nothing is happening, a cheaper suite doesn't fix that. Plenty of founders are paying $139/month for a dashboard that tells them to publish more, which they already knew. That's the gap AgentCeres is built for: an SEO specialist that runs the research, writes the pages, and ships them — alongside GEO, social and ads specialists that share the same context about your product.

First-party note, since we'd rather show the work than claim it: this site's own SEO runs on Google Search Console plus Google's Keyword Planner, not on a paid suite. When we audited our own pages recently, GSC is what told us which queries were nearly ranking, and Keyword Planner is what told us whether those queries had any volume worth chasing — and the uncomfortable finding was that some of our pages ranked well for terms almost nobody searches. No suite would have prevented that; checking volume before writing would have. We're not arguing paid suites are bad — they're very good, and at a certain scale the competitor data is worth every dollar. We're saying that at our stage the binding constraint was execution, not data, and that's true for a lot of the people reading this page.

FAQ

What is the best Semrush alternative?
It depends which part of Semrush you actually use. For backlink and competitor link research, Ahrefs is the benchmark and the most direct swap — Lite is $129/month versus Semrush Pro at $139.95. For most of Semrush's breadth at lower cost, SE Ranking's Core plan is $129/month ($103.20 on annual billing) and tracks 2,000 keywords a day against Semrush's 500 at the entry tier. For basic keyword research without the learning curve, Mangools is the friendliest. All checked July 2026.
Is there a free alternative to Semrush?
Partly, and it's better than most people expect. Google Search Console is free and gives you your own real queries, impressions, positions and pages — first-party data straight from Google. Google's Keyword Planner is free and gives search volume from the same source the ads auction uses, though it buckets volume into ranges unless you're running ads. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for sites you can verify and includes a full site audit. What you cannot get for free is competitor data — nobody else's keywords or backlinks. If your work is on your own site, the free stack goes further than the paid-suite marketing suggests.
Why is Semrush so expensive?
The tier price is only part of it. Semrush Pro is $139.95/month on the classic SEO Toolkit track, or $199/month for Semrush One Starter on the newer AI-inclusive track. On top of that, additional seats start around $45/month each, and several capabilities are sold as separate add-ons — which is why 'unexpected charges for add-ons' recurs in Capterra reviews. G2 tags 'Expensive' on over 500 reviews. The breadth genuinely is large, so the price isn't unjustified; it's just that most buyers use a fraction of what they pay for.
Semrush or Ahrefs — which should I pick?
Pick by the primary job. Ahrefs has the better backlink index and crawler, cleaner navigation, and a genuinely free tier for verified sites — choose it if link-building and competitive link analysis are the main work. Semrush is broader: PPC research, social tools, a local SEO toolkit, and bundled AI-visibility tracking across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity — choose it if SEO is one piece of a wider marketing stack. Both have credit or add-on friction as the top complaint; neither has a data-quality problem.
How is AgentCeres different from Semrush?
Different category. Semrush is a data suite: it tells you what to do, and you or your team do it. AgentCeres is a managed AI marketing team where an SEO specialist runs the keyword research, does the on-page audit, writes the pages and ships them — reading your Google Search Console directly so the work is grounded in your real queries — alongside GEO, social and ads specialists. It has no keyword database, no backlink index and no rank tracker, so it doesn't replace Semrush for competitive research. Pricing is flat, $19–$499/month, rather than per seat plus add-ons. If you have an SEO person who needs better data, buy Semrush. If you have no SEO function and the pages aren't getting written, a suite won't change that.
